Peter Michielse – SARA Peter.H. Michielse

Peter Hans Michielse (1962, the Netherlands) has studied numerical mathematics at Delft University of Technology from 1980 to 1986. His Ph.D. thesis, under supervision of Prof. Van der Vorst, combined the aspects of parallel computing, multigrid methods and oil reservoir simulation, and has been defend successfully at Delft University of Technology in 1990. This work has been sponsored by Shell Research in the Netherlands.

In the period 1990-2004, he worked for two vendors of HPC systems: Convex/HP (1990-1997) and Silicon Graphics (SGI, 1997-2004), mostly in a technical role. At SGI, he has been Principal Systems Engineer since 2002, Pre-sales and Professional services manager since 2001, and European Director of Systems Engineering ad interim since 2002.

In September 2004, he joined the Netherlands National Computing Facilities Foundation (NCF, part of NWO) as deputy director, involved in the high-end computer infrastructure for scientific research in the Netherlands. In November 2011, he joined SARA as deputy director Strategy and Policies.

He has been the editor of the book “De Rekenmeesters (2009)”, of NCF and SARA, which gives a detailed and illustrated overview of 25 years of High Performance Computing in The Netherlands.
